DISA ordered to contribute to geospatial intelligence suite

DISA and DOD are both asked to provide input on map-based intelligence solution

The Defense Information Systems Agency and other Defense Department organizations must contribute to a suite of geospatial intelligence visualization tools, according to memo signed by DOD Deputy Chief Information Officer Dave Wennergren on Oct. 14.

The Geospatial Intelligence Visualization Services suite is provided by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, which develops imagery and map-based intelligence solutions for national defense, homeland security and navigation safety. Earlier this year, NGA officials said they wanted to upgrade the agency's data

The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and DISA must publish additional suite services that utilize DISA’s Global Content Delivery Service and Defense Enterprise Computing Center, according to the memo.

Services provided by the suite must also be published to the Unclassified but Sensitive IP Router Network (NIPRnet). Services from the suite must also be published to the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System, according to the memo.

DOD officials must also identify existing information systems and programs that provide geospatial visualization capabilities, and identify which providers and consumers of geospatial visualization services will migrate to the DOD Geospatial Visualization Shared Enterprise Service, according to the memo.

Plans must be submitted to the DOD CIO by Dec. 15, 2009.
