Most people who follow information technology are familiar with the Top 500, which keeps close track of the fastest high-performance systems on the planet. But why should supercomputers get all the glory? Data centers might not push the petaflop boundary or have catchy names such as Jaguar and Kraken, but they play an essential role in any organization’s IT infrastructure and the global economy at large.
Data Center Knowledge, a news and information site devoted to this topic, recently filled the void with a list of what it believes are the 10 largest data centers in the world. The list is limited to single-building facilities dedicated to data center use, excluding campuses with multiple buildings and mixed-use buildings, and they range up to 1.1 million square feet. That’s 22.9 football fields — not counting the end zones.
