NOAA Geospatial Platform at a glance
Organization: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Project: Geospatial Platform
Challenge: To develop a geospatial Web tool that could handle terabytes of data for analysis by and delivery to federal, state and local agencies and the public.
Solution: NOAA modified a previously developed geospatial application and secured the necessary data-sharing procedures and agreements to allow delivery to agencies and the public. The public portal is available via an open Web site.
Impact: On the public side, the Geospatial Platform has attracted more than 4.8 million visitors in several months. On the government side, agencies and departments have found it helpful for agency-to-agency data sharing and public outreach.
Duration: Ongoing. The project started in April and launched in June.
Cost: NOAA took advantage of existing resources and added an estimated $480,000.
