NIST to tackle big data

Big data will be on the agenda this year for the National Institute of Standards and Technology's IT Laboratory, InformationWeek reports.

Lab Director Cita Furlani said that in addition to its continuing work on cybersecurity and cloud computing, NIST will be increasing its focus on studying various aspects of big data, the collections of datasets that have grown so large it is difficult to work with them using traditional data management tools.

Furlani said NIST will focus on standards for big data technology, including their interoperability, reliability and usability.

"NIST can have a lot of impact on the big data question," Furlani told InformationWeek.

The agency has been working for years on helping the federal government manage the massive amounts of data it has amassed, including helping publish a report titled "Harnessing the Power of Digital Data" in 2009.
