Microsoft unveils Office 365 for Government
Microsoft has unveiled Office 365 for Government, a new multitenant service that stores U.S. government data in a segregated community cloud.
Built to the same security standards that Office 365 for Enterprises offers, the cloud platform includes Exchange Online, Lync Online, SharePoint Online and Office Professional Plus.
“We also know that security and privacy play a big role in any decision to move to the cloud,” Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Office Division, wrote in a blog.

Office 365 supports rigorous global and regional standards, such as ISO 27001, SAS70 Type II, the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the Federal Information Security Management Act and others, Koenigsbauer said. To meet the evolving needs of its government customers, Microsoft also plans to support IPv6 in Office 365 by September and is taking steps soon to support Criminal Justice Information Security policies, he said.
At the company’s Public Sector CIO Summit in February, Microsoft officials announced plans to develop a multitenant government community cloud to add to the variety of cloud offerings Microsoft provides agencies and businesses.
“We continue to look at making sure that we have the broadest range of options,” Curt Kolcun, vice president of Microsoft Public Sector, told a group of reporters Feb. 29 at the CIO Summit in Redmond, Wash.
Microsoft joins a growing list of companies providing government-specific cloud infrastructure, including Amazon, Computer Sciences Corp., Google, Harris Corp., IBM, Lockheed Martin, RightNow Technologies and Terremark.
