New service makes it easier to track use of Amazon cloud

Public-sector agencies that make use of Amazon’s cloud services now have a more fine-grained way to track their use of Amazon Web Services.

The company announced in a blog post that its AWS Detailed Billing Reports will allow customers to track AWS usage and costs on an hourly basis, as well as by individual products.

AWS counts some 300 government agencies and 1,500 educational institutions in the United States as customers, including federal agencies such as the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board and some Energy Department agencies.

Federal agencies have been moving some of their services to the cloud under the administration’s “cloud first” initiative, choosing from options including private, internal clouds, hybrid clouds and — for services such as e-mail and website hosting — commercial public clouds such as Amazon’s.

In September 2011, the General Services Administration accredited AWS to provide services to federal agencies, joining cloud services such as those offered by Google and Microsoft.
