DARPA translator hits the field
It's always good to see Advanced Research Projects Agency work get called up for active service. The Joint Forces Command has ordered 35 laptops with language translation software for testing in Iraq, various
publications are
reporting. IBM Corp., of Armonk N.Y. is supplying the units, which are Panasonic Toughbooks loaded with IBM Research software. The software translates Iraqi Arabic into English and vice versa: One user speaks into a microphone and the computer quickly produces both a written synthesized voice translation into the other language. To develop the software IBM built on work from earlier
DARPA translation projects.
