Answers:

1. Secure Sockets Layer encryption

Answer: c. Taher Elgamal, an Egyptian-born scientist, is credited with inventing SSL while working for Netscape. The patent was granted in 1997, though Netscape continued to give it away for free.

2. Computer mouse

Answer: a. Douglas Engelbart, who invented the first mouse, made of wood, at the Stanford Research Institute in 1963.

3. QWERTY keyboard

Answer: d. Christopher Latham Sholes, who also was a Wisconsin newspaper publisher and politician, was co-inventor of the first practical typewriter (the very first typewriter was invented as early as 1714 by Henry Mill) and the inventor of the QWERTY keyboard. He and printer Samuel W. Soule received a patent for a machine they used to number pages in 1866, and in 1868, Sholes, Soule and Carlos Glidden received a patent for the first typewriter that became commercially successful — after they sold the patent to E. Remington & Sons. In 1873, while working on improvements, Sholes came up with the QWERTY keyboard.

4. Integrated circuit

Answer: b. Jack Kilby. Two teams working separately invented the first integrated circuit, or computer chip, at about the same time. In 1959, both applied for patents, which were awarded to Jack Kilby and Texas Instruments and Robert Noyce and Fairchild Semiconductor Corp. The two companies eventually cross-licensed their technologies. Kilby, however, who also invented the portable calculator in 1967, was later awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his integrated circuit work.
