What IT trends have the greatest impact on your quest for security?

When most people think of cybersecurity threats, they likely think first about what they fear: hackers, scammers and online spies. Ask IT security officials, and they also think about their organization’s goals.
A show-floor survey of 150 security officials conducted by the security company F5 at the RSA Conference last month in San Francisco highlighted the evolution of the threat landscape in their top concerns. Just above complex cyber threats was virtualization, something every agency is shooting for. Espionage made the list, but trailed a few percentage points behind BYOD, something employees want and enterprises are trying to provide. And just behind espionage were cloud computing and Web-based applications, which are among the foundations of future public-sector computing.
The threat landscape is always changing and, as the survey shows, the uncertainties of new technologies and processes are a part of it. The increasingly distributed, virtualized and politicized IT environment presents challenges many are not yet equipped to deal with.
