An Army directorate awarded an eight-year $114 million contract to Logicon Inc. of Herndon, Va., to provide training services, and technical and exercise planning support for battle simulations.The 7th Army Training Command, Directorate of Simulations Forward of the U.S. Army Europe uses simulations to train troops. The exercises range from large-scale to platoon-level operations.Logicon will assemble hardware to conduct simulations, provide technical support during exercises and collect data after battle simulations. The company also will validate the training curriculum and train participants, officials said. Retired Vice Adm. Henry C. Giffin III was appointed director of combat systems lifecycle support by Anteon Corp., an information technology and electronic-business services company in Fairfax, Va.Giffin will direct Anteon's efforts in contracting and partnerships in support of Navy ships and systems. He was commander of the Atlantic Fleet Naval Surface Force. The Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga., recently donated more than $80,000 worth of computer equipment to a local school.Sherwood Christian Academy received 166 PCs, 161 monitors and 47 printers. The base made the donation under an executive order established; to close the digital divide.'The computer donation to the schools is an investment in our future,' said Col. Charles V. Mugno, base commander. A Marine Corps unit successfully tested a system to integrate seven separate workstations used on amphibious assault vehicles.The Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle Command Variant's Communications Suite seeks to get seven applications that run on different workstations under different operating systems to work on one system. Currently, each app used on an amphibious assault vehicle, including the Intelligence Analysis System, Tactical Combat Operations and Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System, runs on a dedicated workstation.By integrating all the apps on a single server using a variety of processor cards, the suite allows members of a vehicle's crew to see other applications without having to walk to the dedicated workstation, which can be difficult when the vehicle is on a mission, said Lt. Col. Harry Oldland, deputy reporting program manager of the AAAV Technology Center in Woodbridge, Va.The Corps plans to issue a request for proposals for the system's hardware in January.
