Jim Wright, Central Animal Shelter regional director, said the site, at www2.co.san-diego.ca.us/sddac/petadopt.asp, has helped the county greatly reduce the number of animals euthanized each month.

'Our goal is to get lost pets back to their homes or to find owners for our homeless animals,' Wright said.

The site shows an inventory of lost and found animals in addition to photos and descriptions of pets up for adoption. The county's animal shelters harbor more than 30,000 animals annually.

'We don't just get a few cats and dogs, we get everything including goats, iguanas, rabbits, horses, pigs and snakes,' he said.

Jeff Grissom, Community Services Group information technology manager, said the site is unusual because it does not focus on making money for the county, as many other online services do.

The site saves time by providing pet owners a way to check online if shelters have any animal meeting their lost pet's description.

The site includes a feature that lets someone who finds a lost pet wearing an animal control license enter the license number online and get the name and phone number of the owner.'Licensed pet owners can decline to have personal information posted on the site.

The Web site provides information about all animals being housed at each animal shelter. It also provides instructions for people who find stray animals and templates for lost and found pet posters.

The county uses Chameleon management software from HLP Inc. of Huntington Beach, Calif., running on a 550-MHz dual-processor Pentium III Compaq ProLiant server with 256M of RAM and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
