SAN DIEGO'With more than 757 miles of fiber and copper cable in place to link network servers, desktop computers, data storage units and external connections, the second of two major hubs for the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet went online last week.Less than a month after the July 9 opening of its first network operations center in Norfolk, Va., the Navy and contractor Electronic Data Systems Corp. flipped the switch on NMCI's newest center, at the North Island Naval Air Station in Coronado, Calif. The center will manage NMCI operations for users west of the Mississippi.The California and Virginia installations will become the main hubs for an intranet that is slated to connect more than 360,000 sailors and Marines, providing a single, enterprisewide service for voice, video and data exchange.Through the NMCI contract, EDS will provide Navy and Corps users with hardware and software from suppliers such as Dell Computer Corp., Dolch Computer Systems Inc. of Fremont, Calif., Microsoft Corp., and Symantec Corp. of Cupertino, Calif.Security will be a major focus of the California network operations center, said Capt. Bill Bry, the Navy's NMCI program manager.'We have been very much concerned about security,' he told reporters. 'NMCI will bring us to the forefront of one of the most'if not the most'secure networks in the world.'Navy personnel and contractors will attack the intranet constantly, trying to uncover security flaws, Bry said. The Navy also will train NMCI users on the latest applications for Microsoft Windows 2000, helping to bolster security, ensure uniformity, allow remote management and replace legacy software.
