About 1,000 Navy personnel displaced after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon have been moved to an office in Arlington, Va.Seventy percent of the Navy's Pentagon offices were destroyed in the attack, said Ron Turner, deputy Navy CIO. Five floors in a commercial building in Arlington have been converted into temporary office space until portions of the Pentagon can be rebuilt. The office is equipped with 860 notebook PCs, 335 desktop machines connected to the Secret IP Router Network, 30 servers, cabling and routers, Turner said. The server farm in the Navy's Budget Office, which was hit in the terrorist attack, was also recreated, Turner said.'Our entire network control center was hit,' he said. Turner added that the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet wasn't greatly affected by the attack. Even though contractor Electronic Data Systems Corp. had begun some work on the project at the Pentagon, those seats had not been cut over to the network. Also, data stored on NMCI computers destroyed in the attack had been backed up the night before.While Navy officials moved into their new digs, the Pentagon Renovation Program awarded a contract, potentially worth $758 million and expected to take 11 years to complete, to rebuild the damaged areas of the building. Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Chantilly, Va., was chosen over two other design-and-build teams, officials said.'With the award of this contract, we can begin immediate repairs to the Pentagon and make the necessary improvements that will keep it operational for the next 50 years,' said Lee Evey, the Pentagon Renovation Program manager.Defense officials said the contractors, working around 20,000 Pentagon em-ployees, will remove about 350 million pounds of debris and demolish Pentagon sections down to the concrete columns and floor slabs. They will then reconstruct two wedges of the building and the damaged area, all together roughly twice the office space of the Empire State Building.The contractor team also includes Shalom Baranes Associates of Washington, HDR Inc. of Omaha, Neb.; MC Dean Inc. of Chantilly, Va.; and Southland Industries of Irvine, Calif.
