Survey: Public-sector IT pros lack clarity about stimulus funding

Seventy-nine percent of respondents to a recent survey said they were only somewhat aware of the flow of stimulus funds into their organizations and the impact the money might be having.

Public-sector information technology professionals lack clear information about the flow and impact of funding to their organizations under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to a survey conducted by Dell.com.

The company surveyed 662 IT professionals from federal, state and local governments, and education and health care organizations. Ninety-five of the respondents were federal employees, and 185 were state and local employees.

Seventy-nine percent of respondents said they were only somewhat aware of the flow of stimulus funds into their organizations and the impact that funding might be having on their operations. Only 8 percent expect the funding to have a significant impact on their organizations’ budgets. Seventy-eight percent said information related to stimulus funds was nonexistent, too generic or not understandable, and added that more detailed analysis tools are needed to better navigate the recovery package.

When asked to identify the main impediment to modernizing IT infrastructures in federal and state governments, respondents were almost evenly split: 35 percent cited complex, disparate networks and lack of standards; 32 percent cited a lack of resources to deploy and manage IT; and another 32 percent cited IT budgets.
