Nexsan DeDupe SG uses deduplication technology for storage configurations of a petabyte or more.

Nexsan Technologies and FalconStor Software today announced the Nexsan DeDupe SG product line, a family of storage products based on deduplication technology, a process whereby duplicate data is deleted and only unique data is stored.

Typically, storage deduplication systems are used as backup targets and operate only during a backup window, usually about eight hours a day. Other deduplication systems spin drives and burn energy for the other 16 hours of the day, said Bob Woolery, senior vice president of marketing for Nexsan. The Nexsan DeDupe SG supports AutoMAID, a process that idles or shuts down inactive drives. As a result, customers "need fewer fans, fewer power supplies, fewer rate controllers," he said.

FalconStor is providing deduplication software for the DeDupe line with its FalconStor FDS deduplication software, which offers a space-saving option for writing data to disk, FalconStor said.

The Nexsan DeDupe SG product has a Network Attached Storage interface and offers connectivity to IP networks, said Brendan Kinkade, a marketing executive at FalconStor. Kinkade notes that even though Nexsan DeDupe SG can scale up to more than a petabyte of logical capacity, large numbers of files do not degrade the performance of the system.

Nexsan DeDupe SG supports all major backup software and directly accepts Oracle RMAN, Microsoft SQL and other database dumps, FalconStor said.

It "solves two very pressing needs — reducing capacity costs and improving operating efficiency," said Michael McGuire, chief commercial officer for Nexsan.

The Nexsan DeDupe SG product line ranges from $49,000 for a 4-terabyte configuration to $300,000 for 52 terabytes.
