Lenovo, HP unveil green PCs for Earth Day

Connecting state and local government leaders

PC makers HP and Lenovo strive to "take only pictures, leave only footprints" this Earth Day, with energy efficient laptop and desktop PCs.

Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day, PC makers Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard are rolling out a series of energy-efficient laptops and desktops designed to leave a smaller carbon footprint.

Lenovo is introducing the L Series, a new breed of ThinkPad laptops. The L Series uses a large amount of recycled material, both in their construction and packaging. Lenovo designed the products with business, government and education customers in mind, the company said.

According to Lenovo representatives, the ThinkPad L412 and the L512 offer customers a choice of Intel Core i3 and i5 processors; Intel integrated or ATI Mobility Radeon graphics; 3G or 4G wireless connectivity with Gobi 200 module support for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon; multitouch touchpads; up to 8 hours of battery life; and the Windows 7 operating system.

The L Series laptops use as much as 30 percent post-consumer content from plastic bottles and used IT equipment for their LCD covers, palm rests and cases. Each L Series laptop saves the equivalent of 10 plastic water bottles.

The L Series products meet the Energy Star 5.0 rating for energy efficiency and are also rated Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool Gold for their environmental features, Lenovo said. Both L Series laptops are 40 percent more energy efficient than previous ThinkPad laptops. The ThinkPad L412 and L512 go on sale in mid-May and start at about $649.

Hewlett-Packard introduced two energy-efficient desktop PCs this week, as well as updates to its TouchSmart 600 PC.

The HP All-in-One combines a tower computer and monitor in one integrated design. The All-in-One is aimed at a consumer market, with a built-in wireless LAN (802.11 b/g/n), SuperMulti DVD player with LightScribe technology. It also meets Energy Star standards and qualifies for a Silver EPEAT registration. It has a mercury-free, white light-emitting diodes display that requires less energy. The All-in-One is also the first consumer desktop with some components that are free of brominated flame retardants and polyvinyl chloride.

Designed for business, government, health care and education customers, the HP Compaq 6005 Pro Ultra Slim desktop PC is about the size of a ream of paper, and features an AMD processor, AMD’s Vision Pro technology and security software. It offers integrated ATI Radeon 4200 graphics capability; a dual-monitor option; DDR3 memory; and 10 USB ports.

The HP TouchSmart 600 touch-enabled PC now offers Intel Core i5 and i3 processor options, plus Beats Audio, audio technology that was developed by a team consisting of rapper Dr. Dre, Interscope Geffen A&M Records chairman Jimmy Lovine and HP engineers.

The HP All-in-One desktop PC starts at $699 and is available today at www.hp.com. The HP Compaq 6005 Pro Ultra Slim desktop is available April 26 and starts at $599. The HP TouchSmart 600 with Intel i5 and i3 processors, Beats Audio, Paint It! By Corel and Roxio CinemaNow starts at $1,099. A TouchSmart with Intel Core i3 goes on sale today; a version with i5 goes on sale April 28 at www.hp.com.
