The Federal Register's Web site is getting a major overhaul just in time for the register's 75th anniversary on July 26.

FR 2.0 uses the bulk XML from the Government Printing Office’s Federal Digital System to present regulatory material in new configurations and the applications on the site are built from open-source code that will be made available for unrestricted use in other applications, NARA said.

The Federal Register’s Web site is getting more than a facelift to prepare for the register's 75th anniversary later this month.

The National Archives and Records Administration plans to release a new more user-friendly version of the register’s site designed to encourage people’s involvement in the democratic process. The new site, being referred to as FR 2.0, will be similar to a daily online newspaper that will guide users to sections of interest such as money, environment, world, and science and technology, NARA said in a statement.

The new site will use social media and integrate seamlessly with the Regulations.gov site to make it easier for people to submit comments directly into the official e-Rulemaking docket.

A prototype for the site is available on the Web site of NARA's Office of the Federal Register. According to the prototype, the site will initially be populated with opportunities from Federal Register notices, while a second phase will incorporate opportunities submitted to FR 2.0 by agencies.

The site will go live in beta form on July 26, the register’s 75th anniversary.
