A tiger team made up of personnel from the Communications Automated Information System Interface network met the urgent communications needs of the 401st Army Field Support Brigade.

The 401st Army Field Support Brigade had a problem. Operating in extremely remote regions of Afghanistan, the unit had difficulty connecting its logistics task forces and maintenance support teams to the Army’s Combat Service Support Satellite Communications Automated Information System Interface network.

To meet the service’s urgent request to get these units connected, a CSS satcom team consisting of personnel from the Army’s Program Executive Office for Enterprise Information Systems was selected to develop an affordable solution that could be rapidly deployed and easily used by the soldiers of the 401st AFSB. This capability had to link the unit’s voice-over-IP phones and virtual local-area networks over the CAISI.

The satcom team created a tiger team consisting of CAISI program support staff members, system engineers and information assurance specialists who worked with the CAISI vendor and personnel from the 401st AFSB. In four weeks, the tiger team put together and delivered a system that allowed the use of VOIP phones and VLANs over a CAISI network to provide both voice and data services to remote locations. Through the team’s efforts, the troops of the 401st AFSB have been able to communicate via voice and data over the CAISI since July 2010.
