IBM Corp. adds internal RAID to p610 eServer

IBM Corp. has added an entry-level model and internal RAID storage to the p610 eServer line.

The p610 now comes with one or two 333-MHz IBM Power3-II processors as well as 375- and 450-MHz CPUs, said Chuck Bryan, IBM's director of pSeries product marketing.

An optional RAID Level 5 controller can configure up to six hot-swappable disk drives within the p610, storing up to 300G.

The server, available in tower or rackmount cases, runs IBM AIX 5L, AIX 4.3.3 or SuSE Linux Enterprise Server Version 7 from SuSE Inc. of Oakland, Calif.

IBM emphasized the p610's energy savings through the Power3-II copper-interconnect technology that consumes less electricity than aluminum wiring. The internal RAID removes the need for an external array with a separate power supply, Bryan said.

An entry-level p610 with one 333-MHz processor and 512M of memory, without the internal RAID controller, lists for $5,995. A configuration with one 333-MHz chip, 1G of memory and internal RAID 5 on four hot-swappable disks lists for $17,175.
