Veterans Affairs Department CIO John Gauss submitted his resignation today, effective June 29, citing personal reasons for his departure. During his tenure, he oversaw the department's development of an enterprise architecture, consolidation of disparate IT systems, and institution of antivirus and security measures.
Deputy CIO Edward Meagher will take over as acting CIO at the end of the month, a VA spokesman said.
Gauss, who came to the VA in July 2001 after retiring from a 32-year career in the Navy, said he was honored to be part of an organization that puts veterans first.
'We have built an enterprise architecture that everyone can be proud of,' he said. 'More importantly, we have made great progress in turning that architecture into reality.'
Previously, he was commander of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. He directed the development, acquisition, and management of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems for the Navy, and selected joint service programs for development with the Marine Corps.
