The Government Printing Office's Federal Depository Library Program has issued specifications for public-access systems at federal depository libraries.
The specifications, which GPO has posted at access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/computers/rs.html
, will be mandatory as of Oct. 1, 2004.
The specifications call for PCs with Intel Pentium 4 or comparable Advanced Micro Devices Athlon processors running at least 2.25 GHz. For cartographic data use, the specs require a 3-GHz processor. The library program will require the computers to have a minimum of 512M of RAM, or 1G of double-data-rate synchronous dynamic RAM for cartographic use. The specifications also outline the required ports, bus speed, video controller, sound card, drives, monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse, operating system, browser and applications.
