New registry organizes architecture components

Agencies that want to share reusable enterprise architecture components now have a secure Web site to store and manage such components.

The Federal Enterprise Architecture Component Organization and Registration Environment,, will hold both existing components and those under development, said Marion A. Royal, agency expert with the General Services Administration's Office of Governmentwide Policy.

The work on began under the component subcommittee of the CIO Council's Architecture and Infrastructure Committee, Royal said.

Every time agencies register a component, the registration generates a third-level domain name that provides a neutral Web area for agencies to work together, Royal said. For example, if the component could be used in financial management systems, it would be registered under

For each registered component, the site also automatically creates an electronic mailing list, an online discussion area and a document library with version control, Royal said. uses the SourceCast tool from CollabNet Inc. of Brisbane, Calif., to organize the components and control access to the collaborative workspace.

The new repository will serve as a complement to the Federal Enterprise Architecture Management System, said David Layton, OGP's program manager for FEAMS.
