Quantum's new dual tape library

A storage company that has been a major backer of the Super Digital Linear Tape format has an automated enterprise tape library for both SDLT and Linear Tape Open 2 formats.

Quantum Corp.'s new Mako PX720 accommodates up to 20 tape drives and 732 tape slots in a standard rack-size frame, said Mike Hardy, a vice president of the San Jose, Calif., company. A capacity-on-demand feature lets users unlock more drives and slots with a software key when they need extra storage.

The Mako PX720 library with 20 drives has a maximum throughput of 1.16T per hour in SDLT format or 2.3T per hour in LTO-2 format.

Five Mako PX720 libraries can be linked together to provide up to 146T of storage with LTO-2 tapes, Hardy said. A five-library unit outfitted with SDLT-320 tapes, which have 320G capacity with 2:1 compression, could hold a maximum 103.7T of data.

A base configuration with two tape drives and 190 tape slots costs $93,000. A configuration with eight drives, 718 slots and native Fibre Channel connectivity is $223,050.
