FBI systems chief Zalmai Azmi today issued an electronic communication to all bureau employees that establishes the agency's reorganized CIO office, which has broad authority over IT management.
CIO Azmi said the electronic communication describes how bureau resources have been realigned to form the new office. The bureau's CIO office includes about 500 FBI employees as well as contractors.
"The biggest thing is that any new project will have to go through an approval process," Azmi said.
The process will involve evaluation by CIO officials for projects' conformance to the goals of the president's management initiative, the bureau's investment management plan, the FBI's portfolio management process and the agency's strategic plan.
Azmi has just collected comments from other bureau officials on the FBI's strategic plan for systems development.
At the same time, the FBI is developing an enterprise architecture with the assistance of business process owners within the bureau, stakeholders and contractor BearingPoint Inc. of McLean, Va.
