Automated response to the rescue

The Tempe, Ariz., Fire Department has deployed software to automate response processes and get ready for a national preparedness exercise that will be held later this month in Arizona and Oregon.
Tempe's fire department is using the on-demand version of ESS Crisis to manage its daily planning and emergency event mitigation at the city's emergency operations center. ESS is a provider of environmental, health and safety, and crisis management software.
ESS Crisis is an integrated information management system that lets emergency operations personnel quickly mobilize and support response teams, manage incident scenes and assist with post-event recovery operations. The on-demand version is supported by off-site, redundant information technology systems for increased data security, offering organizations with limited IT budgets the ability to reduce infrastructure costs and save time, ESS officials said.
City officials are expected to use ESS Crisis when they participate in Topoff 4, an exercise
supervised by the Homeland Security Department to test federal, state, and local preparedness and response capabilities during a complex simulation of a terrorist attack.
Topoff 4 will be held Oct. 15-24 in several locations in Arizona and Oregon. The exercise provides the opportunity for local, state, and federal agencies to coordinate emergency preparedness efforts.
'ESS Crisis will be an important support tool for Tempe responders who are participating at Topoff 4 and our day-to-day operations,' said Fred Guelich, who is involved with technical services and record management at the Tempe Fire Department. ESS will help the department streamline communications and data systems used to share information during crises, he said.
