Army opens an app store for iOS devices

The Army is getting into the mobile apps game, with the launch of a prototype Army Software Marketplace, which at the moment has 12 mobile training applications for use on personal phones or tablets.

“The Apps Marketplace is at the center of Army efforts to radically reduce the time to deliver applications across the force,” Lt. Gen. Susan Lawrence, chief information officer/G-6, said in an Army announcement.

The goal of the program is to develop a submission and approval processes that will allow service members, organizations and third-party developers to submit apps for Army-wide distribution, Lawrence said. The program will use agile development practices, with the aim of developing and delivering apps quickly.

The 12 apps on the site, approved for use within the Army’s Common Operating Environment and written for iOS devices, were developed at Army training schools as part of the Connecting Soldiers to Digital Apps (CSDA) initiative, which will continue to submit apps.

App currently available in clued The Soldiers Blue Book, Army Values, Army Social Media Handbook and Developing a Performance Work Statement.
