NEC Technologies' Multi CD-R combo gives users recording options beginning at$349

In the Multi CD-R unit, NEC Technologies Inc. has combined a CD-recorder for file
distribution and archiving, a 20X CD-ROM reader and a rewritable 650M phase-change dual
(PD) drive.

Users can record a track at once, a disk at once or a 2X-speed copy of a file onto
CD-recordable media. For backup, the product uses removable and rewritable PD cartridges.
The PD drive verifies and error-checks files after each write.

A noncontact recording process means the optical media can last up to 30 years or
500,000 write-erase cycles, according to NEC. The Multi CD-R will work with MS-DOS,
Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems.

The Treasury and Veterans Affairs departments and the Army and Navy use NEC’s
optical storage products.

NEC Technologies of Itasca, Ill., sells the Multi CD-R through resellers Digital
Equipment Corp., Electronic Data Systems Corp. and Vanstar Government Systems Inc. of
Fairfax, Va. Agencies also can purchase NEC optical products through Army PC-2, Veterans
Affairs’ Procurement of Computer Hardware and Software, and other contracts.

The Multi CD-R starts at $349.
