To make an informed purchase of a PC Card modem/LAN adapter card, you need to know some
basic terms and facts about them.


Both versions of Ethernet are shared-media LANs, where all nodes use the same
bandwidth.


Most desirable are modems that support the Group 3 standard, offering various levels of
fax processing.


Class 1 fax-modems use the computer’s CPU to do much of the data processing,
making them more versatile with a variety of fax systems.


It now also applies to the additional connector required by many PC Card modem/LAN
adapters which connects the card to external phone and LAN cables. Losing a dongle can be
costly: Prices for replacements range between $20 and $60.
