Cabletron Systems Inc. and Xylan Corp. have added Gigabit Ethernet uplink capability to
their SmartStack and OmniSwitch switch families.
Cabletron gave the $3,995 SmartStack ELS100-24TXG high-density workgroup switch 24 Fast
Ethernet ports and two Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. The ELS100-24TXG does wire-speed
switching and accommodates Web or Cabletron Spectrum management, RMON standards-based
remote monitoring and port mirroring.
The Rochester, N.H., companys SmartTrunk can link the switch ports with sister
platforms.
Xylan of Calabasas, Calif., designed its OmniSwitch Gigabit Switching Module to do
high-speed edge switching on networks with Gigabit Ethernet backbones. The companys
any-to-any products handle Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, asynchronous
transfer mode, token-ring and Fiber Distributed Data Interface switching.
The two-port, $5,950 GSM-FM module follows the 1000Base-SX standard for gigabit
transmission over multimode fiber up to 500 meters.
The $8,950 GSM-FS follows the 1000Base-LX standard over single-mode fiber up to three
kilometers.
