Suite creates Web site for DOD, aerospace vendors to share data

The Defense Department initiative to cut the cost of building and maintaining
aircraft and missile systems is still alive, supported by software from Lockheed Martin
Co. subsidiary Formtek Inc.

The company’s CITISolution represents the latest incarnation of the electronic
commerce data management system that conforms to DOD’s Continuous Acquisition and
Lifecycle Support standards, said Rodney Heisterberg, director of electronic commerce
solutions for Formtek of Palo Alto, Calif.

The CALS software sets up a shared Web data management environment for government
program managers, aerospace companies and suppliers. CITISolution meets the CALS standard
for contractor-integrated technical information services, Heisterberg said.

CITISolution bundles a client-server software suite, Formtek:Orion, to manage
documents, images and ad hoc workflow. An intranet gateway and integrator tools for links
to legacy systems also are part of the object-oriented package.

The software takes about 90 days to set up and bring on line, according to Heisterberg.
Setup and training are included in the price.

A virtual enterprise data management lifecycle template establishes the
organization’s basic shared access and distribution procedures through database
indexes, schema, tables and security profiles.

CITISolution runs on an Oracle8 database under SunSoft Solaris 2.6 and Microsoft
Windows NT Server 4.0 platforms.

It works with Solaris, NT, Windows 9x and Web browser clients and costs $300 to $700
per user depending on the number of users.

Electronic commerce data management systems based on Formtek:Orion currently support
DOD’s Global Combat Support System and a variety of military aircraft, missile and
satellite development programs, Heisterberg said.
