SMS Data Products Inc. has begun designing Ultra SCSI II and Fibre Channel RAID storage subsystems.

''The McLean, Va., company's @CD-Rkive e-mail archiving jukebox, released last year, is still awaiting agency adoption under a broad federal records policy, marketing director Rob Marks said.

''The operating system-independent SRS Series will compete with RAID subsystems from makers such as Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and EMC Corp. of Hopkinton, Mass.

''SMS' product accepts as many as 12 18G hard drives in each of two chassis. Priced from $5,000 with two 4G drives, the subsystem can transfer up to 120 megabytes/sec at RAID 0, 1, 0/1, 3, 4, 5 or undifferentiated JBOD (just a bunch of disks) levels, SMS said.

''SMS discounts the scalable RAID subsystem on its General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule contract.
