The publisher of Semio Map has a new application that creates browsable intranet and Internet directories.

Semio Corp. of Palo Alto, Calif., adapted its core search engine for browsing, which requires a different kind of directory than searching does, according to Semio marketing director Gail Claspell.

'You don't need to know exactly what you're looking for' with a browser, Claspell said. People generally understand the value of browsing, but they find it hard to make the directories manually, she said.''

The Postal Service, which uses manual procedures to develop and maintain some of its intranet directories, is a beta tester of Semio Taxonomy, company officials said. The new tool uses the search engine from Semio Map, the company's intranet text mining software, to create browsable directories for large intranet sites.

'Search and browse are two different metaphors. We think they're complementary,' Claspell said.

She likened Semio Map to a tool for knowledge workers who are expert at a given subject, whereas Semio Taxonomy would work better for general users.

Those who browse with Semio Taxonomy still must specify high-level topics and defining characteristics, however.

Claspell said the Semio Taxonomy engine automatically extracts key phrases from intranet or Internet text pages, identifies their relationships and aggregates them into concept clusters.

Gaining knowledge

'Semio Taxonomy will make deductions about the relationships between concepts,' Claspell said. The software includes taxonomy starter files that define characteristics of 500 high-level topics.

The company includes basic crawler tools with the Semio Taxonomy software, which runs under Microsoft Windows 9x or Windows NT or under SunSoft Solaris on Sparc servers.''

The average price of $150,000 per server is based on number of seats. Semio also sells services for maintaining intranet or Internet directory structures, Claspell said.
