Rational Software claims its suite is a revolutionary tool for app development

Rational Software Corp. officials said they expect the new Rational Suite to become the Microsoft Office of application development tools.

'We think Rational Suite will change
the application development market in the same manner that Microsoft Office changed personal productivity tools,' Rational chairman and chief executive officer Paul Levy said.

The Cupertino, Calif., company in June released the integrated product suite.

The multiplatform Rational suite comes in four editions, which are tailored to software analysts, code developers and application testers.

Sees the needs

Rational Suite AnalystStudio, priced at $3,295 for a single-user license, is for analysts who capture and manage end-user requirements throughout a project.

Rational Suite DevelopmentStudio, which the company licenses for $5,295, includes the Rational Rose modeling tool and other tools for developing applications for Unix and Microsoft Windows NT.

Rational Suite TestStudio is a $5,295 suite for testing the functionality and reliability of application code.

It incorporates means for testing Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language and Java language.

Application testers can verify the operation of a Java applet with browsers, Java virtual machines and foundation-class libraries, officials said.

The Rational Suite Enterprise, priced at $7,495, has all the Rational Suite tools for NT.

Any single tool in the suite can access data in any other tool.
