Flat 17-inch CRT, touch-screen LCD are new additions to Compaq's monitor line

New in Compaq Computer Corp.'s monitor line are the 15-inch TFT5000 flat-panel display with touch-screen capability and the flat, square 17-inch V700 Corporate Value color CRT.

The flat-panel display uses resistive touch-input technology from MicroTouch Systems Inc. of Methuen, Mass. It has a hard-coated polyester top sheet with a current source over a bottom sheet with a conductive coating.

When the user touches the screen, the top sheet contacts the glass bottom layer, causing current to flow to the four corners of the screen in proportion to the distance from the edge.

The controller then calculates the position of the touch based on current flow.

The Corporate Value V700 monitor has a 16-inch viewable area with resolution up to 1,600 by 1,200 pixels and 0.22 mm horizontal dot pitch.

The monitor is Apple Macintosh-compatible. Compaq's General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule price is $1,766 for the Touchscreen TFT5000 and $392 for the V700.
