Make five tape backups at once

Western Scientific Inc. designed the AcceleRAIT tape-duplication system to make five simultaneous copies of a backup tape.

AcceleRAIT copies tapes in the Advanced Intelligent Tape, digital linear tape and 4-mm digital audio tape formats, as well as 8-mm backup tapes. The San Diego company claims a sustained data-transfer rate of 18.5 megabytes/sec over seven high-speed direct memory access channels and SCSI interfaces. The base system, which copies only DLTs, has a federal price of $12,600.

MKS enlarges Windows-Unix toolkit

Mortice Kern Systems Inc. has bundled its MKS Toolkit 6.2 utilities with an X Window System server and renamed it. The new Microsoft Windows-Unix interoperability product, called MKS Toolkit Select 6.2, gives users access to remote Unix applications from Windows clients.

MKS Toolkit 6.2 provides a Unix command-line environment for users of Windows 9x and Windows NT. The toolkit supplies a choice of KornShell or CShell as the primary scripting environment and handles large files in file and tape utilities.

MKS Toolkit 6.2 has a General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule price of $391, including support and update services. The Select version of the Toolkit will be on the schedule within a few months, said a spokeswoman for the Waterloo, Ontario, company.
