Seagate improves hard drive

Seagate Technology Inc. has doubled the capacity of its newest hard drive to a maximum 17.2G by using double or triple disks in a single drive. The drive also comes in 13G, 8.4G and 4.3G capacities.

The U8, the third generation in the U-series line from Seagate of Scotts Valley, Calif., has an Ultra ATA interface. The 4.3G version starts around $89 on the General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule of reseller ComTeq Federal Inc. of Rockville, Md. Compaq Computer Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Siemens Nixdorf Information Systems Inc. of Burlington, Mass., have announced plans to put the U8 in their low-cost PCs.''

The U8 is rated to withstand up to 350 g's of shock when not operating and up to 63 g's of shock when operating. It comes with Seagate's DiscWizard installation software.
