466-MHz Celerons go through battery of tests

The GCN Lab requested client PCs with 466-MHz Celeron processors for this comparison review.

The five PCs tested met seven additional specifications:

• Intel 810 chip set with integrated video and 4M of dedicated graphics memory

• 64M of RAM

• One Enhanced IDE hard drive of 4.0G to 6.9G

• One EIDE CD-ROM drive

• Sound on the PCI bus with basic or integrated business audio speakers

• 100-Mbps network adapter on PCI bus

• Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition.

Prior to testing, the lab staff upgraded all the PCs to Win98, Second Edition if they did not arrive with it preinstalled.

Following the same order and process each time, the lab loaded and executed the Ziff-Davis Benchmark Operation's Winstone 99 Version 1.1 and WinBench 99 Version 1.1.

Once benchmark testing was completed, the lab checked the systems for year 2000 readiness using the Norton 2000 2.0 tool from Symantec Corp. of Cupertino, Calif. All passed.

After a month of use and client management tool testing, the lab disconnected the systems and inspected the interiors.

Systems received grades in four areas: Usability, features and configuration, value, and performance.

Usability testing, which accounted for 40 percent of the overall grade, examines how easy it is to learn and use a product.

Features and configuration testing, which made up 20 percent, examines the quantifiable aspects of proper configuration.

Value accounted for 20 percent of the overall grade; it weighed the selling price and the quality of components.

Performance, which made up the final 20 percent, took into consideration scores from these ZD benchmarks: Business Winstone 99, CPUmark 99, Business Graphics WinMark and Business Disk WinMark, all run at 1,024- by 768-pixel resolution and 32-bit color depth.
