Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. has new software to extend virtual private networking inside an enterprise network, securing communications between individual servers and clients.

The Redwood City, Calif., company has released a suite of improvements to its VPN-1 product family as part of what it calls the Secure Virtual Network architecture.

The VPN-1/FireWall-1 suite is designed to improve quality of service, public-key infrastructure compatibility and network availability.

First things first

VPN-1 prioritizes traffic before it is encrypted. A real-time traffic monitor lets the network manager identify bottlenecks in the VPN and understand usage trends. High availability comes via transparent failover between redundant VPN gateways. Check Point Software officials said the suite is compatible with most PKI products and digital certificates issued by different systems.

Two products, VPN-1 SecureClient and SecureServer, protect individual points on a LAN. SecureClient serves as an enterprise desktop VPN client as well as a remote access VPN client. It sets up a personal firewall on the client to prevent hijacking of established VPN connections. SecureServer protects individual application servers against eavesdropping inside a network.

Check Point's optional $1,495 VPN-1/ FireWall-1 Reporting System consults the other products' security log files to produce real-time or historical canned or custom reports about network use and security. Data previously had to be exported to other vendors' applications.

The enhanced VPN-1/FireWall-1 suite starts at $3,495.

VPN-1'SecureClient is $50, and SecureServer is $895.
