Call home on your cell phone

Federal employees can add a personal phone line to their government cellular telephones under a General Services Administration contract with Nextel Communications Inc. of Reston, Va.

The Nextel i1000+ cellular handset on GSA's Federal Technology Service contract has two digital lines. The first is reserved for official government use through an agency account, but a contract modification announced this month lets the second line ring to a separate personal account, billed directly to the employee.

The contract modification is part of GSA's recognition that employees need to maintain personal lives while on the job, spokesman Joe Phelps said. Government rates for cellular service are up to 20 percent less than Nextel's corporate rates.
