IBM's newest S/390 Multiprise 3000 server comes with electronic commerce software and Lotus' Domino Release 5 collaboration software, said Dave Messina, IBM Corp.'s program director for S/390 marketing.

IBM in the past has charged for each added increment of server performance but now is marketing the Multiprise 3000 as having extra capacity at no extra cost, Messina said, although he would not discuss pricing.

The Multiprise 3000 is for groups of fewer than 500 users, Messina said, while the larger S/390 G5 and G6 models continue to serve bigger groups.

The latest Version 2, Release 8 of the OS/390 operating system [GCN, Aug. 30, Page 6] comes preloaded on the Multiprise 3000. IBM will also supply earlier releases of OS/390 or the VM or VSE operating systems on request, Messina said. The server accommodates one or two IBM processors, 1G to 4G of RAM, and 216G to 792G of internal storage. It has 12 slots for parallel or IBM Escon adapters.

The OS/390 e-commerce software for the Multiprise 3000 has an interface manager, an administrative environment and a dynamically linked library to IBM DB2 relational databases.

Each Multiprise 3000 installation gets its own custom Web site with contact and discussion databases, a project management tool and online training, Messina said. IBM's public S/390 Web site, at, features a model adviser for upgrades.

The server and the e-business tools are available through resellers.
