Imagine 8.4 supplies customizable GIS classifications

The Expert Classifier, new in the recently released Erdas Imagine 8.4 mapping tool, has wizard processes to classify geographic information according to an organization's own criteria.

Dana Wormer, a spokeswoman for Erdas Inc. of Atlanta, said a knowledgeable land planner can design protocols for recognizing data in different land use categories such as sand, pavement, streams and wetlands. Then the protocols can be distributed to all the organization's other users.

'It spreads the knowledge around,' she said. 'You can incorporate ancillary geographic information system data with imagery and do things such as build in weather conditions or terrains.'

Erdas Imagine 8.4 supports file sizes larger than 2G and claims improved interoperability with GIS products from Environmental Systems Research Institute of Redlands, Calif.

Imagine 8.4 can combine multiple files into a single-process chain and reform different projections on the fly into a common map.

Imagine 8.4 lists at $2,000 for Microsoft Windows platforms and $3,000 for Unix. Erdas will soon have General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule pricing available, Wormer said.
