LSI Logic Storage Systems Inc. is betting that the open-systems philosophy can work for storage area networks.

Through its Open SAN Initiative, the company, a division of LSI Logic Corp. of Milpitas, Calif., is promoting multivendor SAN packages based on its MetaStor S-Class line of Fibre Channel RAID subsystems, said Jim Griffin, MetaStor marketing director.

The MetaStor business unit of LSI Logic sells storage subsystems through value-added resellers and systems integrators, Griffin said. What he called cooperative SANs have components from multiple vendors and can be more competitively priced than single-vendor storage networks, he said.

LSI Logic has partnerships with several SAN component vendors and is testing their products for interoperability.

The MetaStor S-Class server-attached storage subsystems come in combinations of 18G, 36G and 50G drives for total capacities of 180G to 5T.

The General Services Administration Information Technology Schedule price for a MetaStor Open SAN with a 250G S-Class dual-controller storage system is about $60,000, excluding servers, Griffin said. The SAN would include an eight-port switch from Brocade Communications Systems Inc. of San Jose, Calif., and two adapters from Emulex Corp. of Costa Mesa, Calif.

Several GSA resellers list MetaStor's Open SANs, as do NASA's Scientific and Engineering Workstation Procurement II and the National Institutes of Health Electronic Computer Store II.
