Commerce lauds workers for systems efforts

The Commerce Department and GCN honored 11 Commerce employees for excellence in systems development, management and implementation.

The employees received their awards at a recent GCN Forum luncheon in Washington:

' Miriam Cohen, special assistant to the Bureau of Export Administration's chief information officer, for her efforts in creating an online export licensing application.

' Gary Fisher and Gordon Gipe, computer specialists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, for their work on year 2000 fixes and developing testing material for posting on NIST's Web site.

' Enrique Gomez, manager of the Census Bureau's Data Access and Dissemination System, for leading the effort to build a system for collecting, processing and disseminating census data.

' Willie A. Graham Jr., a computer specialist at the Office of Information Planning and Review, for overseeing the department's year 2000 program.

' Tiffany Hixson, a contracting officer, for her work on the Commerce Information Technology Solutions procurement, which the department created as a small-businesses-only governmentwide acquisition contract.

' Rick Martucci, chief of the Network and Telecommunications Branch of the Bureau of Economic Analysis, for implementing a tape backup system for the bureau's LAN.

' James Napper, a systems development manager at the Patent and Trademark Office, for overseeing PTO's Electronic Mailroom Project and Public-Key Infrastructure Project, which together will support the agency's electronic commerce and electronic document management efforts.

' Paul Nipko, a program control officer at the National Weather Service, for helping implement the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System.

' Rick Roberts, a computer specialist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, for his work on a departmentwide IT architecture plan.

' Larry Tyminski, deputy CIO at the Bureau of Economic Analysis, for managing the upgrade of the bureau's primary LAN, backup and e-mail server.
