Data General vows 99.9 percent uptime for Microsoft Exchange

Data General Corp. will guarantee 99.9 percent uptime for Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 through its package of support services. Exchange joins Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 in the uptime-guarantee program, said Bob Guilbert, director of Microsoft Windows NT marketing for Data General of Westborough, Mass.

'More and more of our customers demand high availability for their mission-critical applications, and Exchange is turning into one of those critical applications,' Guilbert said.

Under the guarantee program, Data General consultants run the customer's mail servers through a 14-point checklist that examines hardware, BIOS, Microsoft service packs, connectivity and remote-management capability, Guilbert said. Data General checks every six months to make sure the required service packs are installed.

The 99.9 percent uptime guarantee equates to 132 minutes of downtime per quarter, or 8.76 hours per year, Guilbert said.

For sites that do not require the uptime guarantee, Data General provides support and maintenance.

The 99.9 percent uptime guarantee costs $80,000 to $100,000 for a cluster configuration, plus $40,000 to $60,000 in ongoing annual fees, Guilbert said.

For each three-month period in which the site does not achieve 99.9 percent uptime, Data General will refund the service fees for that quarter, he said.
