SSA plans new Web applications to improve site

The Social Security Administration this month will offer a retirement planning application on its Web site, at www.ssa.gov.

No start date has been set, and agency officials declined to provide details about the service. But a new online newsletter announced SSA's intention to launch the retirement planner.

It is one of the agency's first major forays into interactive Web services since it halted a pilot two years ago that let people access their earnings histories online.

The agency also plans to make applications for retirement benefits available online this year, officials said.
