APRIL 7'The Social Security Administration today unveiled an interactive Web tool that will let visitors calculate their future benefit amounts online.

The Social Security Retirement Planner can be found at www.ssa.gov/retire.

The planner lets users determine their potential retirement payments using three methods. With the simplest method, the user enters current earnings into the system, which then calculates the potential benefit based on current dollars or on future dollars, adjusted for inflation.

For the second method, users must enter their complete earnings history. SSA does not provide this information automatically from its salary history files in order to protect the data. 'In the future, as we develop more secure authentication procedures, we will input your numbers directly from our earnings database,' SSA notes on the site.

Finally, for a more detailed analysis, users can opt for the third method and download a program to run on their own computers.

The planning site lets visitors find out how different types of earnings and benefits would affect their retirement payments, and whether spouses and children qualify for benefits under the head of household's earnings.
