APRIL 10—The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is now making nautical chart updates available weekly via e-mail.
The program is a joint effort of NOAA's National Ocean Service and Maptech Inc. of Andover, Mass., NOAA officials said. The raster charts are the result of a cooperative R&D agreement between NOAA and Maptech.
Purchasers of the electronic charts can choose to receive the update patches via e-mail. The patches can automatically update screen versions of charts, but users can also create new charts on their hard drives with the patches.
"The weekly update is practical, timely, convenient, cost-effective and accurate," said Capt. Dave MacFarland, director of NOAA's Office of Coast Survey.
The updates could include patches based on notices from the Coast Guard, NOAA's Critical Correction Database, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency and the Canadian Hydrographic Service.
Subscription information can be found on Maptech's Web page at www.maptech.com.
