SiteScape Inc. has upgraded its Forum collaboration product to make it easier for users to customize the Web software.

SiteScape Forum for Web collaboration relies on e-mail attachments and LDAP synchronization to keep workgroups in touch.

New features include a file system, Hypertext Markup Language templates and support for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, SiteScape marketing director Heidi Gabrielson said.

Last year SiteScape of Maynard, Mass., acquired Forum from AltaVista Co. of Palo Alto, Calif. SiteScape's upgrade lets users e-mail attachments into or out of the individual forums hosted by the software.

'We're making Forum more usable through the mail client,' Gabrielson said. Users can choose to receive e-mail attachments of new items that pop up in their discussion forums.

'It's more a push environment than a pull environment,' she said.

With the templates, users can customize the look and feel of Forum sections via HTML and Tcl code, Gabrielson said. Access controls can be at the file, folder or directory level.

'Anyone who's moderately technical could customize the way Forum looks,' Gabrielson said.

The file system lets co-workers share information without going through the discussion forums, 'recreating the familiar Microsoft Windows file system for the Web environment,' she said.

Built-in synchronization with LDAP directories reduces administrative overhead, Gabrielson said.

The activity monitor checks in background for activity in selected forums and alerts the user via a sound or pop-up window. 'It's another way of pushing information out to the user,' Gabrielson said.

Forum 5.0 lists for $6,995 per server, and Forum's workflow add-on costs $2,995 per server. A basic bundle of Forum 5.0, the workflow package and support services is $9,995 per server.
