Gigabit Ethernet hub supports multiple types of fiber ports for server farms

An eight-port Gigabit Ethernet hub from Compex Inc. of Anaheim, Calif., is designed to serve data-intensive environments such as power workgroups or server farms.

The 19-inch, rackmountable GR3008 repeater has seven standard 1000SX multimode fiber ports. An optional eighth port is removable to provide choices of multimode fiber SX, single-mode fiber SX or unsheathed twisted-pair TX ports. A standard model with all 1000TX ports will come out later.

The $4,275 hub automatically negotiates half- or full-duplex gigabit inputs. Management software is not needed, but users can upgrade the GR3008 to support Simple Network Management Protocol and browser management. They can also modify configuration parameters through a serial port.
