Lord takes forecasting post

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has named Stephen J. Lord director of its Environmental Modeling Center.

Lord, a numerical weather prediction specialist and pioneer in hurricane analysis and research, will lead a team of scientists in developing computer models to predict weather and climate trends.

Lord has been the center's acting director since September 1997 and is credited with developing systems that analyze hurricane data. He replaced Eugenia Kalnay, who left to head the meteorology department at the University of Maryland.
